Progress Report on Deliverables

  1. Web site development work to support the programme (including directory information, inter-lending arrangements, access agreements, support information for inter-institutional collection management etc.). [Web-site and various web-based tools and documents]
  2. Initial web site was set up to accomodate the technical outcomes of the project when the project started. Since then ongoing web site development work has been undertaken with a view to designing a portal which will provide various tools for collaborative collection management. These tools are listed in the SCONE CCM Tools section (http://scone.strath.ac.uk/ccmtools/ccmhome.cfm).

  3. Investigation of models for collection measurement in order to permit effective cross-checks and a mechanism for continuous assessment of research data. This is intended to investigate models for objective assessment. [Report].
  4. An extensive literature search on collection strengths measurement models has been carried out and a detailed draft report produced.

  5. Evaluation of SCURL's approach to collaborative collection management with a view to identifying mechanisms for improving its effectiveness (the approach is based on identifying and recording collection strengths and weaknesses, making this information readily accessible to contributing libraries, and jointly agreeing an approach to sustaining the strengths and addressing the weaknesses). [Report].
  6. At present a report on the evaluation of SCURL's approach is being drafted. This report will then be sent to SCURL for feedback.

  7. Identification of research level collections in the 'New Universities', and other Higher Education Institutions in Scotland; extension of Research Collections Online to include them, possibly applying an improved methodology identified in the SEED 'sister project'. [Report].
  8. National Library of Scotland has been contacted to obtain the Conspectus update sheets for the 'New Universities'. These will then be sent out to these universities to collect data.

  9. Identification of an effective mechanism to automate the implementation of the existing SCURL Expensive Purchases Online policy. [Specification and service facet].
  10. The existing policy document and the report card were received from the National Library of Scotland and made available online from the SCONE web site. It was agreed by SCURL that SCONE would change the policy document. At present the project team is working on the policy document and the report card.

  11. Development of a means of accommodating the Scottish datasets identified as a result of the Scottish Datasets Project and an investigation of a model for keeping this data current.
  12. EDINA has been contacted to obtain the dataset.

  13. Investigation of possible means of accommodating the current Shared Preservation Programme data and identification of an effective model for doing so. [Specification and service facet].
  14. Links have been established with SPIS project. A number of meetings have been held with the Project Officer. A web site has been set up to provide background information on the project.

  15. Development of a means of holding information about national licences (online resources, CD-ROMs etc.). [Specification and service facet].
  16. Project team contacted Colin Galloway and Tony Kidd to discuss the possible ways of tackling this issue.

  17. Development of a way of providing distributed access to research papers held online (e.g., electronic materials identified in the CATRIONA II project). [Specification and service facet].
  18. SCONE project will work with Strathclyde University Digital Information Office to agree a means on providing subject collection level descriptions of electronic research and teaching material created within the university. It is expected that strengths and weaknesses will follow the pattern of a university's strengths and weaknesses in teaching and research activity, although the level of IT awareness in individual departments will be a factor. The question of distributed access will be addressed using CAIRNS technology in cooperation with the Glasgow Digital Library project.

  19. Inclusion of information about collaborative tenders implemented among Scottish university and research libraries. [Specification and service facet].
  20. Project team contacted Colin Galloway and Tony Kidd to discuss the possible ways of tackling this issue.

  21. Integration of this new data with the ongoing development of CAIRNS, RCO and the SEED-funded project to provide researchers with a finding tool that will enable them to identify research materials distributed across Scotland (and ultimately beyond). [Enhanced database and service].
  22. Project team has been working on this with Gordon Dunsire.

  23. Provision of guidance to researchers on how to search individual online catalogues and of information about associated indexing practices. [Specification and service facet].
  24. Project team has been working on this with Gordon Dunsire.

  25. Investigation of mapping of RCO Conspectus data to other collection management subject schemes, nationally and internationally. [Specification and service facet (if possible)].
  26. This will be based on the outcome of the HILT project. Links have already been established with the HILT project.

  27. Report on the project, including exit strategy and recommendations to SCURL and others and proposals for future research and development to improve the Scotland-wide information resource [Report].
  28. No progress to report on this deliverable yet.

  29. Dissemination of project results within and beyond Scotland. [various].
    • Project web site has been launched.
    • Half a day event in June was held to bring together other RSLP funded Scottish projects . GASHE, NASHTE, The Drawn Evidence, and Clinical Notes projects were represented at the meeting.
    • Cosmic Awareness Day was held in June to outline the work of CAIRNS and SCONE and discuss ways in which these projects can work with various regional groups in Scotland and the regional groups can work with each other for mutual benefit.
    • SCONE/SHERAL Awareness Day will be held at the beginning of November to explore the issues such as the relevance of Collaborative Collection Management to the current context in individual institutions, and software tools that may be of value to the acquisitions and serials librarians in the context of Collaborative Collection Management.
    • Project Director has delivered presentations at various seminars and conferences.
    • Flyers have been distributed at meetings, seminars and conferences.
